What to Expect on Your First Scramble

Unlike hiking trails, scrambles take you over rocky ridges, gullies, and hands-on sections where you’ll be moving on all fours. Our friendly, qualified guides will:

  • Teach you how to move confidently on rock

  • Introduce safe scrambling techniques and route finding

  • Support you in tackling exposure step by step

  • Share mountain knowledge, folklore, and local legends along the way

You’ll finish the day with new confidence, a big smile, and the hunger for more adventure.

Sample Routes

Depending on weather and group ability, we may guide you on some of Snowdonia and the Lake District’s best beginner scrambles, such as:

  • Tryfan’s South ridge – a Grade 1 scramble with exciting but safe hands-on sections

  • Y Gribin Ridge (Snowdonia) – a classic Grade 1 scramble with incredible views of the Glyderau

  • Seniors Gully + Ridge - A good option for a wet or windy day which takes us up to Glyder Fawr

  • Striding Edge (Lake District) – an airy but achievable ridge on Helvellyn

(Exact routes vary for safety — your guide will choose the best option for the day.)

Testimonials

  • “I did the Introduction to Scrambling in Snowdonia in March. From start to finish I felt safe and trusted Leon’s professional ability to help me gain more confidence and experience in the mountains and in scrambling. Leon throughout the day was very encouraging and his passion and knowledge for the outdoors and the Welsh mountain ranges was highly evident. Leon also during the day answered any questions that I had about walking/scrambling. I would highly recommend Yonder Adventure Company and the Introduction to Scrambling course. ”

  • "I had an amazing day out in the mountains on an introduction to scrambling course. Leon was a brilliant guide, really friendly and informative about where we were and what we were doing etc. I had loads of fun and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to take that next step from hiking to scrambling. It wasn't scary at all and Leon was really encouraging. The only problem was my knees were rather unhappy the next day!"
