Winter Mountain Walking in Snowdonia: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Experience the Magic of Snowdonia in Winter
Snowdonia (Eryri) is breathtaking all year round — but in winter, the mountains take on a beauty like no other. Frosted ridges, still valleys, and crisp, clear air turn familiar landscapes into something extraordinary.
Winter mountain walking in Snowdonia offers solitude, challenge, and reward in equal measure. But it also requires a little more preparation, the right equipment, and solid knowledge of how the mountains change as temperatures drop.
At Yonder Adventure Company, we specialise in guided winter mountain walks and skills courses across Snowdonia, led by qualified Mountain Leaders who know these hills inside out.
What to Expect on a Winter Hike in Snowdonia
Winter in the Welsh mountains can be unpredictable — one minute you’re basking in sunshine, the next you’re surrounded by cloud and snow. But that’s all part of the adventure.
Here’s what makes it so special (and what to be ready for):
❄️ 1. Shorter Days
With daylight hours limited, planning is key. Early starts are essential, and head torches often make an appearance before or after the walk.
Our guides time routes perfectly so you catch the best of the light and never have to rush.
🏔️ 2. Snow & Ice
Higher peaks like Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Tryfan, and the Carneddau often hold snow from December through February. Expect icy paths, slippery rock, and dramatic views.
Our guided winter walks include expert route selection and advice on when crampons or an ice axe may be required.
🌬️ 3. Changing Conditions
Weather systems move fast here — temperatures can shift by 10°C between valley and summit.
We constantly monitor MWIS forecasts and adapt routes for your safety and enjoyment.
🌄 4. Unforgettable Scenery
Crisp air, snow-dusted ridges, and low winter sun make this a photographer’s dream. Fewer crowds mean you often have the mountain to yourself.
Essential Kit for Winter Mountain Walking
Having the right gear makes all the difference between a great day out and a miserable one. Here’s what we recommend for your winter adventure in Snowdonia:
Insulated jacket and layering system – stay warm and dry
Waterproof trousers and jacket – breathable and reliable
Sturdy waterproof boots – with good grip; crampon-compatible for higher routes
Hat, gloves (plus spares), and neck gaiter
Head torch – with spare batteries
Hot drink flask and energy snacks
Map, compass, and whistle
Gaiters – to keep snow and mud out
Microspikes or crampons & ice axe (for higher routes — our guides will advise)
Not sure what you need? When you book with us, we’ll send you a full kit list and help you prepare properly.
Safety First: Why Go Guided in Winter
Even confident summer hikers can find winter mountain conditions challenging. Navigation is trickier in poor visibility, snow hides paths, and ice makes progress slower and riskier.
That’s where our qualified Mountain Leaders come in. We:
✅ Assess the conditions before and during your walk
✅ Choose the safest and most rewarding routes
✅ Teach essential winter skills as you go
✅ Carry safety and emergency equipment
✅ Make sure everyone enjoys the adventure confidently and safely
“I’ve climbed Snowdon before, but doing it in winter with Yonder was a completely different experience — stunning, safe, and unforgettable.”
– Sarah M., Guided Winter Walk 2024
